USA Olympic Women’s 3×3 Basketball

Down but not out, USA’s Women’s 3×3 Basketball team came back from three consecutive losses (0-3) to continue toward the medal play-in round. Overall they are 3-3 as of this afternoon (8/3) with consecutive wins over China, Canada, and France. The team is comprised of Hailey Van Lith, Rhyne Howard, Dearica Hamby, and Cierra Burdick. Cierra appears as the de facto coach on the floor. The actual Team USA 3×3 coach is Jennifer Rizzotti. Coaches are not allowed on the floor or sideline. They are in the stands cheering along with other spectators. The game is grueling, non-stop until 21 points or the most points in 10-minutes. Beyond the arc is two points and inside the arc is one point. When team fouls exceed 6 (?), free throws are taken. This can be money. Plus, action pauses for players to catch their breath. Whew!

Keys to the game are chemistry, defense, ball movement, and outside shooting. Canada has exuberance and chemistry with two sisters playing together (the Plouffes). China defends well and boxes out efficiently. France seemed aggressive on defense leading to extra possessions. Initially it appeared that Germany had better shooters, defenders, and team chemistry.

To me, it seems better to cut toward the basket, than to set a screen. It also seems important to utilize court spacing. Avoid bunching up like a herd. Mostly, its all about the togetherness of the three/four players (the substitute too). Minimizing one-on-one play or over-dribbling are demerits. The 3×3 game is absolutely about individuals yielding to the success of the whole.

Overall, the US Women’s 3×3 team needs energy, effort, and enthusiasm in their rematch with China today. Adhere to the 3×3 fundamentals cited above. Make good decisions with the basketball, defend intensely, box out vigorously, pass and cut, shoot well from the outside, and enjoy the experience and playing with each other. Good luck.
