CT Women’s Basketball Coach, Geno Auriemma garnered his 1,200th win last night against Seton Hall at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. In the post-game interview, he reflected upon the team’s first game at the Hartford Civic Center circa 1987 with about 50-people in attendance. It was against Central CT State University and played at 5 p.m. as a prelim to the men’s game following at 7 p.m. They beat CCSU.
CCSU at the time was a Division II program lead by Coach, Dr. Brenda Reilly, who coached volleyball, basketball, and softball. In the mid-80s, CCSU was a better basketball program than CT. So, CT’s 1987 win against CCSU in the Civic Center was a big deal. Coach Reilly was the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year for the 1985-86 season and lead the Lady Blue Devils from 1971 through 1995. CCSU’s first year as a Division I program was the 1986-87 squad.
